NIOSH 582 Equivalency - 32 hours (NO LONGER includes the 3 days of the AMT course.  The AMT course must be taken separately.)  This NIOSH Course includes the following) (1) counting procedure workshop; (2) Laboratory Quality Control and Counting Statistics; (3) Walton Beckett graticule calibration; (4) microscope calibration; (5) microscope analysis workshop; (6) review.

Students should bring a microscope with them, preferably the one you will be using regularly.  If needed, loaners can be arranged by contacting GEBCO in advance.

This course is not intended to be a replacement for on-the-job training, in­ house training, and academic accomplishments. Student background profiles range from high-school education to doctoral degrees and span a wide range of experience levels. The less experience and scientific education one has, the more difficult the course.

We recommend that students consider taking the Asbestos Contractor/Superivsor course and Air Monitoring (for Project Managers) or the Asbestos Monitoring (for Consultants) before taking this course due to the extensive terminology and advanced math involved.  It is highly advised that students have laboratory analysis exposure or familiarity with microscopy techniques.  This is not an entry level course.

Students should also obtain a scientific calculator and practice operations and functions such as squaring numbers, square roots, and entering and recalling numbers from the memory. Statistical functions may also be helpful. It is recommended to be familiar with the calculator before the course.
